Vacation Bible School – The Big Apple Adventure

It started today at Spirit Lake Baptist Church- Vacation Bible School (aka: VBS) The Big Apple Adventure. It is all about FAITH. In the book of Romans we read, “Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God.” (Rom. 10:17). This is what it is all about – teaching the Word of God so that it will spark the faith that is within everybody. Every person displays faith, but everyone needs faith in the person of Jesus Christ. Today the children learned about the faith the Centurion Soldier – Jesus was impressed with this man’s faith. He simply believed that all Jesus needed to do was to speak the word and his servant would be healed (Matthew 8:8). Will you believe by faith that Jesus Christ is the Son of God? Stop making excuses. You display faith in so many areas of your life already, so why not step out and trust Jesus Christ with your own life. Chances are you aren’t doing too well handling your own life anyways. Most people keep grasping for something in life, but end up with nothing in their hand – it empty, and they feel empty on the inside.

Our Vacation Bible School teaches children that life makes more sense when you establish a relationship with the Son of God. It will make more sense for you as well. Bow your head before the Creator of all things, confess that you are a sinful person, trying to do life without Him, and ask Jesus Christ to cleanse you from all your sin, and to come into your life. It’s not hard to take this step, but praise must be sat aside. If you received Jesus Christ will you leave a comment. Three easy steps:

1. Admit to God that you are a sinner. (We all are).

2. Believe that Jesus Christ died for you.

3. Call upon Him for Salvation. (He will hear, and He will save).

Being Godly: The Godly Marriage

I just started a new series of messages in July entitled: Being Godly. What does it look like to be Godly? So far we have looked at The Godly Man, The Godly Woman, and this coming Sunday morning we will consider The Godly Marriage. I thought that you might enjoy reading the first  point of the message. Trust that it will promote the needed CHANGE in your marriage.

The Godly Marriage

   I.            Sees God as the Author (Marriage Originator)

Can I ask you if you see your marriage through the eyes of a marriage license, or through the eyes of a COVENANT relationship? Is your marriage something man invented or something that God created and originated?

Where is the first marriage recorded in the Bible? It is found in Genesis (In the Beginning). Open your Bible to Genesis 2:19-25. We read,

“19 Out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to Adam to see what he would call them. And whatever Adam called each living creature, that was its name. 20 So Adam gave names to all cattle, to the birds of the air, and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper comparable to him. 21 And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place. 22 Then the rib which the LORD God had taken from man He made into a woman, and He brought her to the man. 23 And Adam said: “This is now bone of my bones And flesh of my flesh; She shall be called Woman, Because she was taken out of Man.” 24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. 25 And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.”

Are you aware that the book of Genesis is one of the most attacked books of the entire Bible? The reason is because in it we have the origin of marriage. Evil men seek to discredit the book of Genesis, and they seek to suppress the truth in unrighteousness.

Man’s Perfect Wedding Ceremony

As I read this I thought that this is the type of marriage ceremony that every groom would like. He could close his eyes, experience no pain, have the ceremony portion of the wedding over, and when he opened his eyes he would be next to a naked woman! I think Adam really liked that! (Please understand that this was in the confines of the very first marriage. There was NO SIN at this point in human history). Adam and Eve were innocent and blameless.

Additional Insight into Genesis 2:19-25

Allow me to share some additional insight that I pulled from these verses. I hope that you are ready to receive God’s Word to us this morning!

The first truth that I want to share about a godly marriage is that it is between one man and one woman. God created a woman for Adam, not another man. It may not be politically correct to hold to this position, but it is a biblical view, and I choose to be true to God’s Word.

It is also important for us to see that God did not create Adam with multiple wives. God created one woman for Adam – not five. Why bring this out? Because of the sinfulness of man and the fact that a Mormon polygamist is going to court to try and get his sinful relationship sanctioned by the courts. Many people other than polygamists live in sinful relationships contrary to the biblical design. It doesn’t make it right just because it becomes legal through a judicial system.

Next, as I was reading through these verses I noticed that Eve (the woman) was created out of man. Get this – Eve was a part of Adam. What a unique thought -Woman a part of man! Most couples who stand before a minister to get married desire to be a part of each other’s lives. Engaged couples can barely stand how slow the clock ticks towards the day of their marriage – hurry up calendar – MOVE! Husbands, is your wife a part of you? Wives, do you seek to be a part of your husband?

One of the great problems in marriage today is that men and women do not see the total interconnection that occurs when their wedding vows have been sealed. Consider what Adam said about Eve in verse 23,

“This is now bone of my bones And flesh of my flesh,”

Men, are we aware just how close our bones and flesh are to our bodies? In marriage a GREAT SPIRITUAL INTERCONNECTION occurs between the man and the woman. Too many couples once they are married are off doing their own thing. Marriage was NEVER meant to be like that.

In these verses God said that man was to take three very specific steps when he took a wife. This must be for those in the future because Adam didn’t have a father and mother. Take a look at verse 24 with me,

Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.”

What are the main three keys to a godly marriage? They are:

1.   Leave his father and mother (Independence from parents)

Three points here:

  • Do not write your parents off (show honor and respect).
  • Your spouse is to become your primary relationship.
  • Try not to become overly dependent upon your parents.

Family Life Marriage conference teaches, “the degree to which you leave is the degree to which you can cleave.”

2.   Joined to his wife (glue himself to his wife)

The point here is establishing commitment to one another. The NKJV uses the word, “joined”, and the KJV uses the word, “cleave”. They mean the same thing. Literally it means to be glued together.

I love the lyrics of the song by Mary Wells entitled: My Guy. The lyrics I believe teach what we find here in the idea of being “joined” together as a husband and wife. We read,

“My Guy”

Nothing you could say
Can tear me away from my guy
Nothing you could do
‘Cause I’m stuck like glue to my guy

I’m stickin’ to my guy
Like a stamp to a letter
Like the birds of a feather
We stick together
I’m tellin’ you from the start
I can’t be torn apart from my guy

Nothing you can do
Could make me untrue to my guy
Nothing you could buy
Could make me tell a lie to my guy

I gave my guy my word of honor
To be faithful and I’m gonna
You best be believing
I won’t be deceiving my guy

As a matter of opinion I think he’s tops
My opinion is he’s the cream of the crop
As a matter of taste to be exact
He’s my ideal as a matter of fact

No muscle bound man
Could take my hand from my guy
No handsome face
Could ever take the place of my guy
He may not be a movie star
But when it comes to being happy we are
There’s not a man today
Who could take me away from my guy

No muscle bound man
Could take my hand from my guy
No handsome face
Could ever take the place of my guy
He may not be a movie star
But when it comes to being happy we are
There’s not a man today
Who could take me away from my guy

There’s not a man today
Who could take me away from my guy
(Tell me more)
There’s not a man today
Who could take me away from my guy

Have you ever noticed how much time couples spend together when they are dating and engaged? They can’t seem to get enough time together. Yet, after the wedding ceremony it is as if these same couples are trying everything they can to live apart. He’s doing his thing, and she’s doing her thing! What about the TOGETHER thing. Oh, take a look at the word I just spoke – allow me to break it up in its syllables: TO GET HER (together). Men once you have her do things with her.

Sometimes couples seek to stay away because they are having problems. When our children did not get along with each other we would have them sit on the couch and hold hands. It didn’t take very long before they made things right. Maybe that ought to be a NEW THERPHY – SIT, HOLD HANDS until you make things right.

3.   Become one flesh (Establish Intimacy)

Intimacy is not just having sex. It has been defined as: IN TO ME YOU SEE. It is growing together as a married couple through all of life – the ups and the downs, the great times, and the not so great times. It is coming together even through hardships that life can bring.

My wife is my great balance – I am the man I am today because of her. I would never be where I am in life without her being such an integral part of my life. Married people are supposed to be one another greatest cheerleaders! Debbie has been my cheerleader!

Allow me to tell you that if you are living in the past that you will never become one with your spouse. You must break with your past in order to have an enjoyable present and a bright future for tomorrow.

My wife is not the same woman I married in 1979 – life has  a way of changing people, but I am more in love with her today than when I first married her, and I was in love with her then.

Why is it so hard to allow the person you married into your life? Why do we seek to hide so much from the person we love? What is it going to take to become one, to become transparent with your spouse?

If we desire to have a godly marriage it is only going to happen when we fully recognize that God is the AUTHOR (Originator) of marriage. What is the second principle for a godly marriage?

If you want to learn more show up this coming Sunday.

Good Morning America Attacks Christianity (ABC)

Talk about an agenda, and an open and blatant attack against Christianity in America. The program that aired today, July 12, 2011, and began by making Michele Bachmann’s Family business front and center. Michele and her husband run a Christian Counseling Center. If there is one thing I know about counseling it is this: it is very hard to get people to seek counseling. Most people believe that they have life by the tail. No one is forced to go to counseling, especially CHRISTIAN COUNSELING. It appalls me that we are seeing such fragrant attacks against someones FAITH! Remember back in the book of Daniel that his contemporaries could find nothing wrong with his personal values, so they attacked his FAITH as well. Daniel prayed three times a day. What’s wrong with that? Well, it appears that Good Morning America producers have a problem. Go to the ABC website and see for yourself it reads: Bachmann’s Clinic Trying to Change Orientation? Former patients accuse clinic co-owned by Bachman of trying to convert gay men. (

They sent a man into the counseling center with a hidden camera. The man posed as a homosexual seeking to get help to overcome his sinful behavior. The counselor told him that when he had urges to act out that he turn to prayer and God’s Word. Those on Good Morning America turned to the Psychiatric world who apparently believe that prayer and God’s Word only make homosexual tendencies worse. Why don’t they tell that message to the millions of people whose lives have been changed by the power of prayer and God’s Word! The talking heads went on to say that prayer and God’s Word does nothing, and can make matters worse. How sad that they would attack the good and support the evil. Sin of any kind is evil, and yet GMA would attack Michele Bachmann’s faith, and support the sinful behavior of the homosexual lifestyle.

Excuse me – going into a counseling center is a matter of CHOICE! Going into a Christian counseling center is also a matter of CHOICE! Surely GMA is not against people making a free-will decision to go into counseling. Why is it that it is alright to help obese people overcome their addictions through counseling, but when it is a matter of sexual lifestyle choices it is another matter? I was very appalled in this peace when George said, “The man did say that the counselor was caring.” Brian Ross said, “Yes, but he was trying to change him.” Isn’t that what counselors do? Who would waste their time going to a counselor who didn’t want to see people change. Isn’t that what Brain Ross is trying to do with his media piece – change people. How dare him. Couldn’t we accuse him that his reporting is trying to convert people’s belief system? Sound’s like down with the GOP – they have wacko ideas.

As Christians we need to spend more time praying for these people who report news. As you read your Bible pray for those who appear to be attacking Christianity. To the whole crew at ABC – you have been prayed for today. Hopefully you will also someday see the wonderful freedom in following God’s Word – The Bible!

Why don’t ABC and GMA spend more time on reporting NEWS instead of trying to promote their agenda.

Surgery – Just take care of it.

Why do we wait so long as people when we have a medical problem? Well, tomorrow I go under the knife! Yikes. That sounds kinda weird to say. The surgery is supposed to be quite simple. The doctor told me that he has done 4,000 of these same surgeries. I am going in to have a few Varicose veins removed that have been giving me problems for 20 years. Isn’t that waiting a long time! They resulted from an old youth group injury way back when Debbie and I were serving at Winchester Community Church. I rolled my ankle really bad, probably broke it, but never saw a doctor. Well, now tomorrow morning at 8:00 A.M. I will be going in to have a taken care of. If you read this, or you think of me please pray. I want to challenge you if you haven’t taken care of a medical problem that you are facing to do so now.

A Moment of Silence Vs. Acknowledging Almighty God

Is SILENCE the answer? I don’t believe that it is. SILENCE says,

  • We don’t need God.
  • We are self-sufficient.
  • We are more intelligent than those who lived before us.
  • We depend upon human reasoning.
  • We somehow think silence heals.

How sad that as Americans we have allowed our government to set the platform for how we handle times of crisis. The president and First Lady came out of the White House, stood, closed their eyes, and in the background bells chimed. After a minute, they raised their heads, turned around and walked back inside. Wow! We have come a long way as Americans. Have we forgotten that all 50 States acknowledge God in their States Constitutions? Have we forgotten that our money states a motto: In God We Trust? Have we forgotten that etched into the famous monuments of our nation are reminders that we are a nation based upon the Bible. And can I remind you that “Congress is to make no laws in the establishment of religion, or the free exercise thereof.”

Prayer acknowledges,

  • Our dependence upon God.
  • Our need for divine help.
  • Our continue reliance upon God through tough times.
  • That the LORD, He is God.

What is it going to take in our country for us as a nation to return to God. The Bible reminds us, “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord.” I think it is time for all of us as citizens to repent, turn from our wicked ways, stop the SILENCE, and start to cry out to Almighty God for help. We must stop allowing the media to set the stage – WE THE PEOPLE is what my Constitution says!

These are my thought, and I hope that they will bless you.

Pastor Kim J. Alexander

Is Anyone Right?

I was visiting You Tube today and was listening to preachers of the past. I also ran across some videos of those who were crying out against some of the modern day preachers. Critical spirits speaking critical words. Just because I am mentioning names here do not mean that I support, nor does it mean that I will take up the club of criticism. Here is a list of the following preachers that were being sliced and diced on You Tube – these are just the ones I saw, and I’m sure that there are many more:

  • Billy Graham
  • Joel Osteen
  • John MacArthur
  • Chuck Swindoll
  • Jerry Falwell
  • Robert Shuller
I personally believe that we say what the Bible says, and that we keep quiet where the Bible is silent. If you don’t like what a preacher is preaching, start your own church (be aware you will have critics). If you don’t like a book that a preacher has written, write your own book (be aware that you will have critics). If you don’t like the fact that God uses people (broken people in a fallen and broken world), well, just wait, you’ll be in glory sooner than you think. We all will, The Bible tells us over and over again that life is short, its a vapor, teach us to number our day, like grass here today and gone tomorrow. I believe that we must stand for TRUTH, but must we be so vicious and attack like wild beasts? Do we scream at one another at the top of our lungs. Are we so right, that we have forgotten the number one rule? "By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another. (John 13:35). If I don’t particularity like a certain preacher, well, I just don’t listen to them. After all, I do have that choice. The most important thing that you and I can do is to help our own church have a powerful influence where God has placed it.
One generation will pass, and another will come – I just wonder who won’t like us?
Don’t water down the Gospel – it is the WATER! Perhaps  it would do us all some good to spend much time at the well drinking deeply.

The antics of the ACLU

Well, just today I read that the ACLU is going after a university in Montana. Oh my, they may have mentioned God in a graduation service, and of course that goes against the Constitution and the separation clause. Excuse me – I challenge anyone to find the great religion clause that everyone likes to talk about. You know, the WALL OF SEPARATION. You won’t find it in the Constitution, Bill of Rights, or the Declaration of Independence. It is a figment of the imagination. Congress was told clearly by the Founding Fathers that they were to make no laws in the establishment of religion or the free exercise thereof. I don’t see Congress establishing a religion just because it recognizes Christianity and it rightful position in our society. The truth of the matter is that Congress was not to stick it neck into the churches business (unlike the Church of England). This doesn’t mean that Christianity is not to publicly affect politics. All of the 50 state constitutions recognize God’s role in the public square. However, the ACLU, which is suppose to be concerned about Civil affairs has continued to attack the very thing that established their freedom. I find it actually humorous that the heading at their website reads: Because Freedom Can’t Protect Itself. What a joke! It is the ACLU that continues to attack the freedoms that make this country so great.

I for one will do all within the power of my voice to speak out against them, and to educate people about the TRUTH. They seek to protect our enemies, while they seek to strip away the freedoms we enjoy. Consider the following three:

  • Lawsuit against Montana school (for crying out loud it is a University).
  • Detainees at Guantánamo Bay were low-level fighters (Release them is their concept).
  • In their own words: Arizona’s new law is a watershed moment for its blatant disregard of America’s most fundamental values of fairness and equality. ACLU legal teams are preparing to challenge it on constitutional grounds. (Lets open our borders and allow everyone to come in – NOT!).
The ACLU is the same group that wants to take "In God we Trust" off our coins, "One Nation Under God" out of our pledge.

Last year I attended the graduation service at Timberlake High school. It was extremely sad (one that the ACLU) would have been proud of. No mention of God, Christianity, or any religion. Slides were shown of the school principal and the vice-principal running around in pink tutu’s as a fund raiser (the ACLU probably would have promoted this as well). No speeches were made, and nothing of any value was shared with the graduates (another thing the ACLU would have liked). Nothing of substance was shared, and there watching the graduates through the past year I see kids without morals, moving into society bringing with all of their problems (but lets pretend that they are the healthy ones, and we are the sick ones). They will cost us, for it has been said, "Pay now, or pay later". I believe that we are actually doing both. Tax payer education funding school that teach no morality (the ACLU likes this), and we have no American patriotism as a result.

It is time, right now, today, in the present we speak up, to stand out, and to hold the ACLU accountable. Shame on them hiding behind the symbol of the Statue of Liberty.

Let Freedom Ring!

Bible Reading

The first Sunday of May I encouraged the SLBC congregation to read through the Gospel of Matthew. It would be interesting to see how many actually did this. I heard some very discouraging news on my way to the office this morning. Most Christians who claim to be Christians are not practicing their Christianity. That is terrible sad news, and the trend must stop. Years ago I mentioned to the SLBC family that 70% of all teenagers that leave for college stop attending church altogether. I told the body that as a pastor that was unacceptable to me. I didn’t want that for the teenagers of SLBC. A vital faith is what we want for all of God’s people. If you want a solid faith you MUST become a Bible reader. Read the Word of God, and allow it to penetrate into the core of your very being. The Bible says,
"This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success." (Joshua 1:8)
If you read through Matthew you probably saw the following:
  • Matthew 1 – Genealogy and birth of Jesus Christ
  • Matthew 2 – Visit from the wise men (Wise men still seek Him today)
  • Matthew 3 – John the Baptist prepares the way for Jesus (his cousin)
  • Matthew 4 – Satan temps Jesus – he fights using Scripture (there is a key for us)
  • Matthew 5 – The beginning of the Sermon on the Mt – Beatitudes shared
  • Matthew 6 – Deeds, prayer, fasting, money, and worry talked about
  • Matthew 7 – Deal with the speck in your eye, Ask, seek, and knock, Narrow way, Be fruitful, build on the rock
  • Matthew 8 – Miracles performed – from healing the sick, quieting a storm, to casting out demons
  • Matthew 9 – Paralytic healed, Matthew called, and more healing
  • Matthew 10 – Names of the Twelve Apostles given, sending out of the Twelve, and other topics
  • Matthew 11 – John the Baptist sends messengers to Jesus, Jesus offers true rest for the soul
  • Matthew 12 – Jesus is LORD over the Sabbath, heals on the Sabbath, accused of casting out demons by the prince of demons
  • Matthew 13 – Parables (A view of the Prophecy through the Ages)
  • Matthew 14 – John the Baptist is beheaded, Jesus feeds 5,000, and walks on water
  • Matthew 15 – Defilement comes from the heart, additional healing
  • Matthew 16 – Pharisees and Sadducces seek a sign
  • Matthew 17 – Mount of Transfiguration
  • Matthew 18 – Discussion over who will be greatest, how to deal with a sinning brother, parable of unforgiving servant
  • Matthew 19 – Marraige and divorce is the topic
  • Matthew 20 – Workers in the vineyard, greatness in serving, more healing
  • Matthew 21 – Triumphal entry into Jerusalem
  • Matthew 22 – Parable of the Wedding feast, discussion about the Resurrection
  • Matthew 23 – The many Woe’s (Can you find them all?)
  • Matthew 24 – Jesus speaks about the future end times
  • Matthew 25 – Parable of the ten virgins, parable of the talents, and discussion of the judgment of the nations
  • Matthew 26 – Plot to kill Jesus, Judas agrees to betray Jesus, Passover celebrated, Lord’s Supper instituted, Jesus prays, and is arrested
  • Matthew 27 – Jesus stands before Pontius Pilate, soldiers mock Him, Simon carries Jesus’ cross, Jesus is crucified
  • Matthew 28 – The great RESURRECTION chapter, and the giving of the Great Comission
I hope that you found your reading through Matthew exciting. Jesus is being presented as King in this book. Is He the King of your life? Get into the Bible and surrender to His Lordship over you.

Memorial Day and our Soldiers

This coming Monday will be Memorial Day. In the Webster’s dictionary we read, "May 30th, formerly observed as a legal holiday in most states of the United States in remembrance of war dead." I find it a little disturbing that the word "formerly" is used in the definition above. We celebrate Memorial Day in REMEMBRANCE of all those who gave their lives so that we can enjoy the freedom we have each day in the United States of America. In the news today was a story about how President Obama is going to miss going to Arlington Cemetery to lay a wreath at the tomb of the unknown soldier. Instead he will be vacationing in Chicago with his family. Now, I know that other Presidents have missed attending the event, after all, they do have heavy responsibilities that rest on their shoulders. However, the President serves as President because of the soldiers who gave their lives to keep the highest office in the country alive. I also believe it is strange that the "Commander in Chief" – the head of the military would miss this sacred day; a day to honor the lives of men and women who served to protect the freedom of America.

I must also comment on the recent decision made by Congress, at the pushing of the President to repeal the DADT (Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell) policy. Shame on these elected officials – they are like bottles tossed to and fro with every wave. They cave into the pressures of the homosexual community. I have no doubt that the majority of the military, and the great majority of the soldiers that gave their lives for the freedom of this country would NEVER want sodomites serving in the military. I am MALE, and as a MALE I would not want some homosexual solider sleeping in my quarters, or huddled near me on a battle field. I can picture in my mind even the unknown soldiers turning over in their graves – embarrassed by the recent decisions of the Commander-in-Chief, and the U.S. Congress. Perhaps it is better for our country not to have Mr. Obama lay a wreath on the tomb of the unknown soldier. I believe that he is definitely out-of-touch with the American people (except those who are attached to his agenda, and who desire to sink with the ship).

I still believe in the sovereignty of America, and the Freedom of this great nation. I stand and place my hand over my heart when the U.S. Flag is presented. I still sing, God Bless America, My Country Tis Of Thee, and America The Beautiful. One of the greatest songs we sing as Americans is the Star Spangled Banner. It ends with the following question, "O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?" This song was composed by Francis Scott Key, "In Defense of Fort McHenry" in September 1814. Congress proclaimed it the U.S. National Anthem in 1931. Perhaps it would do Congress well to go back and study the early history of our great country. Either man the fort, or resign. I believe we need to ask for Congress to step down. The real BUCK stops with the American people.

Please enjoy this coming Memorial Day. If you see a flag, look at it with thanksgiving. If you come in contact with a Vet, thank him, or her for serving. Enjoy the freedom you have this coming holiday.

Finances in a World Gone Mad

How do you and I handle our money today? Some people would rather not talk about it. Others say, “There you go again, you pastor’s always talk about money.” Are you aware that 16 out of the 38 parables in the Bible deal with money? The Bible devotes 500 verses on the subject of prayer, but over 2,000 on money! Do you think money is an issue that we ought not to talk about? Wrong! All I want to do here in this specific blog is to direct you to the following websites. I recently came across them, and I believe you will be encouraged by visiting them:
